About Daniel

Daniel Reeves is a licensed Professional Engineer and Certified Irrigation Designer with more than 20 years of hands-on experience in irrigation system design, performance auditing and landscape water management. His work spans residential, commercial, municipal and agricultural projects across multiple climate zones.

He holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering with a concentration in water resources, and later earned the Certified Irrigation Designer credential through the Irrigation Association.

Experience

Design engineer, regional irrigation firm

Daniel spent the first decade of his career designing and commissioning irrigation systems for parks, golf courses, homeowners' associations and large residential properties.

Water-efficiency specialist, municipal water agency

He later worked for a municipal water agency, where he carried out hundreds of irrigation audits and helped implement ET-based scheduling and rebate programs.

Technical writing and teaching

Daniel has written technical guidance used by landscape contractors and has presented at Irrigation Association events on practical ways to improve system efficiency without specialized software.

Areas of expertise

His technical focus includes precipitation rate matching, distribution uniformity, cycle-and-soak design, soil water balance, hydraulic modeling, and converting conventional sprinkler systems to drip and micro-irrigation. On this site, that covers:

  • Lawn and turf watering requirements and schedules
  • Sprinkler precipitation rates, run times, uniformity and system design
  • Drip and micro-irrigation layout and flow calculations
  • Irrigation hydraulics, pipe sizing and pressure loss
  • Evapotranspiration, crop coefficients and irrigation scheduling
  • Soil water holding capacity, infiltration and leaching
  • Cost and water-savings analysis for system upgrades

His role on this site

Daniel develops, validates and reviews the calculators and reference data on Irrigation Calculators. Every tool is built on established engineering principles and published sources, including Irrigation Association practice, ASABE standards, FAO and USDA publications, and university extension recommendations.

He reviews the method, formulas and sourced values of each page before it's published. The formulas, assumptions and limitations behind the calculators are documented in our methodology, and our editorial policy explains how content is written, reviewed and corrected.

Daniel does not sell irrigation products or design services. The goal of the site is to provide clear, transparent tools that help homeowners, landscapers and farm managers make better water-use decisions.
